Probably Australia’s most sustainable precinct, Barangaroo was inspired by the Cadigal people who lived in the area for around 60,000 years and primarily used it for hunting and fishing. After the non-indigenous settlement of Sydney, the area became an industrial village built around a gasworks and dockyards. By 2006 cargo shipping had moved away and after an international design contest it was redeveloped into a magnificent 6 hectare parkland with premium commercial and residential spaces that fully integrate with the Sydney CBD.
Barangaroo is hailed as one of Australia’s most successful urban regeneration projects and a world class example of sustainability. The precinct has been designed to be carbon neutral, water positive and divert 97% of construction and 80% operational waste from landfills.
Barangaroo South was developed by Lendlease who received approval for its Concept Plan in 2010 and built commercial, residential, hotel floor space and it’s public domains. The precinct has become one of Sydney’s most fashionable retail and dining places and a must visit destination for people visiting or relocating to the city.
It holds a 6 Star Green star rating from Green Building Council and has won a swag of awards including Leadership in Design and Performance from World Green Building Council in 2018, RLB Australian Development of the Year and WSP award for Australia’s Best Sustainable Development.
Barangaroo is expected to be complete by 2023 and by that time will also include more apartment buildings, a 6-star hotel and casino.
